State of Design 2010

Join in the fun once again as the State of Design festival hits Melbourne from 14-25 July. The goal of the festival is to increase awareness of the value of design while showcasing how design generates innovation, promotes sustainability and adds value to business and society.

Last year we launched makedo at Design:Made:Trade with a diverse collection of creations conceived by some of Australia’s leading design personalities. In 2010 it is your turn. Join in the mayhem at a special making party event where everyone’s invited for some playful creativity.

The makedo making party takes place at the Long Table on July 17. You’ll find the Long Table in the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Buildings as a part of Design:Made:Trade.

There is also a whole lot more happening with no less than 75 events across the Festival’s four main programs:

  • Design Capital / Business Seminar Series
  • Design for Everyone / Public & Cultural Program
  • Design:Made:Trade / Industry Program
  • Premier’s Design Awards / Awards Program

**Edit** Due to so much interest in the makedo making party, we have decided to open the floodgates and welcome more people into our workshop. We’re all out of free passes, but to join in all you need to do is make your own way down to the Long Table on Saturday July 17 between 2 and 4 pm.

Stitches & Craft show

Feeling crafty?  Then take a big breath and dive in to the 2010 Melbourne Stitches and Craft Show where a unique mix of contemporary and traditional creativity awaits.   Makedo is proud to present the makedo making hub at this year’s event, which runs from May 5th - 9th at Melbourne’s Caulfield Race Course.

For the very first time, visitors to the Show will be inspired to use their  playful creativity to make design objects, kids costumes, play objects, furniture pieces, decorations for the home –  just about anything you can think of – from materials commonly found around the house and makedo’s connector system.

The makedo making hub will hold three free daily workshops where adults and children can make their very own makedo masterpiece.  Crafty construction skills are put to the test with a chance to win a prize for the best creation in the daily makedo challenge.

Stitches and Craft Show dates:
Melbourne 05 – 09 May
Sydney 18 – 22 August
Brisbane 16 – 19 November

Makedo workshop times:
10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm daily.

Head to the Stitches and Craft Show for further details about exhibitors, activities, and more.

EcoPET: seeing green

A wander through West Walk Mall in Tokyo’s Roppongi district can be a memorable experience.  Amongst all the glitz and glamour, a recent exhibition challenged consumers with some interesting constructions made out of upcycled drink bottles.

The exhibition was a part of the recycled Green Carpet produced by Teijin for the Tokyo International Film Festival.   Over 18,000 drink bottles were used to produce the carpet that wound through Roppongi, terminating at the site of the Festival opening.  At several points, eye-catching constructions (pictured above) also made from recycled material helped spread the green message.

With objects ranging from endangered species through to decorative domestic products, a light-hearted twist was given to this important consumer message.   The International Film Festival may have come and gone, but people are still seeing green in Tokyo.

Re-use: the Interior View

There are often moments of brilliance when the creativity and bright-eyed enthusiasm of design graduates is put on show.   This is indeed true in the current exhibition put together by RMIT School of Design (TAFE) Interior Decoration + Design at Trades Hall in Melbourne.

The students, who much to our delight designed the exhibition space themselves, set a brief embracing re-use. Some might call it exhibition design for the GFC, but our eyes tell us that a tight brief can have amazing outcomes. Having seen makedo at State of Design they thought our little clips might be a fun way to put the whole thing together and what has emerged is a stunning sculptural array of geometric facets, each presenting the work of a student. We dropped in briefly today to offer Maisha as guardian to the exhibition. She looks so contemplative sitting on her wall, we just hope she puts on a smile when the opening party kicks off. Watch this space for pics from the opening.

For those in Melbourne, you can see the ID + D 09 Graduation Exhibition at Trades Hall from November 25-27, 10am-4pm.

UPDATE:  See below for some more pics of the opening and from earlier preparations…

Precision co-ordinates

With all of the lip-service being paid to eco design terminology these days, it is refreshing to come across an outfit that is a true living, breathing example of the sustainable dream becoming reality.   The collected minds behind TEN XYZ specialise in the use of digital manufacturing technologies, and their quirky outcomes were recently featured at 100% Design London.

The familiar migration of pens and pencils into the kitchen fruit bowl has been subverted with simple finesse by Stephen Bretland.  His fruit bowl is supplied as a wooden disc with slots, and the user adds pens and pencils of their own.

Michael Marriot’s shelves can be made from any substrate - the magic is in a fixing module that is designed to be as effective visually as it is structurally.  Michael’s motivations and methodology are a direct response to what he sees as the unreal consumer fantasies inherent in contemporary furniture manufacturing.

The roof-top tile birdhouse from Tomoko Azumi provides shelter for a family of winged friends.   Using waterjet cutting, discarded roofing tiles are cut to an appropriate size to home small garden birds.   Detail facades reference the historical era of the original tile.

See more innovation from the TEN collective on their website.

Bowerbird takes flight

A highlight of the design calendar in Adelaide, South Australia, the inaugural Bowerbird Bazaar will be held at Queen’s Theatre from October 9-11. As a showcase of Australian design driven art & wares, it will provide fertile ground for the growth of a makedo tree.

Seeking to bring awareness to the public about the amount of disposed materials in our daily lives, visitors will use makedo to clip their coffee cups to the branches, which will steadily bloom into a majestic tree during the course of the show.
With an address in Playhouse Lane, it sounds as though they’re off to a good start before the show even begins.

Bowerbird Bazaar is an initiative supported by Craftsouth.
